Balloon angioplasty is associated with an often unpredictable risk of abrupt coronary occlusion, which is the leading cause of in-hospital death and myocardial infarction. Clinical, angiographic and lesion variables predictive of risk of abrupt occlusion are reviewed and a low, medium and high risk profile stratification is developed. Current management of abrupt occlusion is discussed.
Key Words: Balloon angioplasty unstable angina
