Abstract
Twelve patients with a high incidence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and conduction abnormalities were investigated electrophysiologically before and after intravenous injection of 2.5 mg atenolol. In accordance with previous studies a significant increase in basic cycle length, sinus node recovery time, sino-atrial conduction time, A-H interval, atrial and A- V nodal refractory periods was found. In addition, six of the 12 patients showed a definite increase in episodes of repetitive atrial responses and atrial fibrillation after atenolol. The underlying electrophysiological mechanism for this increase is unclear. The study indicates that acute use of the drug may exacerbate atrial tachyarrhythmias in susceptible patients.
