Abstract
The mean values of risk factors have been examined, together with expected incidences of coronary heart disease, in the North and South European cohorts of the Seven Countries Study. The characteristics of the cohorts were markedly different. The differences in incidence which may be attributable to the levels of specific risk factors or groups of factors have been quantified. Serum cholesterol was shown to be the only really important factor in the different incidences. It is suggested that major risk factors exist other than the standard widely-used blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and age, which accounted for approximately 50% of the different incidence between North and South European cohorts.
