European infarction study (EIS): A secondary prevention study with slow release oxprenolol after myocardial infarction
EUROPEAN INFARCTION STUDY GROUPReceived 18 April 1982; .
Abstract
The European Infarction Study (EIS) is a multicentre, double-blind placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial planned to involve 4000 postinfarct patients. It was designed to test the efficacy of slow release oxprenolol 160 mg twice daily in the prevention of death and non-fatal cardiac events in the period 252 weeks following acute myocardial infarction. In a subsection of patients, 24 h ECG monitoring at specified intervals was undertaken in an attempt to determine the influence of treatment on the incidence of dysrhythmias and their relation to cardiac death in the patients studied.
Recruitment to the study was terminated on 6 July 1981, on the advice of the Review Committee. At the time the recruitment closed, 1741 patients had been admitted.
